Find a New Best Friend
We do NOT adopt to homes in Southern California or out of state with the exception of the Reno/Tahoe area. Please see our Resources page for other California Labrador Retriever rescues. We update the list of available dogs as adoptions occur and as new dogs arrive, so please keep checking for the latest information. All dogs listed below are still available unless otherwise noted. If you would like to adopt from CCLRR, please go to the Adopt page to read about our adoption process. All dogs are tested prior to entering our program, however you will want to introduce your dog before adopting. Shelters do not test with cats and not all foster homes have cats so if a bio does not specifically say "Cat Friendly," we do not know and a proper introduction is recommended. Please check our Courtesy Postings as well!

Roxy
Female Black Lab
3 Years

Meet Roxy – Your Adventure-Ready Best Friend
Roxy is a stunning 3-year-old black Labrador retriever with a heart as big as her joyful personality. Energetic, bright, and always ready for action, she loves walks, car rides, and anything that gets her outside exploring. With her likely hunting-line background, Roxy is a perfect match for an active family looking for a loyal adventure companion.
True to her classic Lab nature, Roxy is sweet, affectionate, and wonderfully cuddly. She’s smart, attentive, and bonds deeply with her people. With other dogs, she prefers slow introductions and a bit of extra time to feel comfortable—but once she trusts, she’s golden.
At home, Roxy shines. She has great house manners, sleeps soundly in her dog bed, and is doing beautifully with her training. She’s eager to learn, eager to please, and loves being part of a routine. She is fully housebroken and enjoys hopping in the car to go wherever you’re headed.
Roxy is a spectacular, loving girl who’s ready to become someone’s devoted, fun-loving partner. If you’re looking for a bright, beautiful Lab to share your life and your outdoor adventures, Roxy may be the perfect match.

Kona
Male Yellow Lab
4 Years
Meet Kona — Your Self-Sufficient Swim Buddy!
Kona is an 80 pound, striking, athletic, and affectionate 4-year-old yellow Labrador who is blossoming now that he is safe, cared for, and part of a loving foster home. After being left alone in a rural backyard for over a month, this spirited boy is finally getting the attention he deserves.
He is youthful, enthusiastic, and delightfully cuddly (especially when he is not soaking wet from the pool). Kona adores balls of every kind — the squeakier and more floatable, the better. His favorite game involves “accidentally” nudging his ball into the pool and diving in after it. He can happily entertain himself for long stretches with water play.
Kona previously lived outdoors, so he is still learning home manners. He is working on housebreaking and crate training, and he continues to improve each day. His interactions with the foster family’s confident cats show curiosity mixed with excitement; with time, structure, and dog-savvy felines, coexistence may be possible.
This handsome boy has a tall frame and a wonderfully expressive, scrunchy face. Because of his size and energy level, introductions to children will be best made once he has settled further and completed his neuter. Kona would thrive with an active family that enjoys outdoor adventures — swimming, hiking, and plenty of playtime. He has lived peacefully with a small dog and is currently doing well with two large Labradors as they work out pack dynamics. If you believe Kona may be the right fit for your home, please reach out to Janine at 408-202-0498 for additional details or to discuss adoption.

Stray From Bakersfield Shelter
Hank
Male Black Lab Mix
8 Years
Meet Mr. Tall, Dark & Handsome
Hank is a striking, agile, 8-year-old, 89-lb black Lab mix with a gentle soul and a heart full of love. With his elegant white tuxedo chest, five white-tipped toes, and a sprinkle of white hairs on his tail, he truly stands out. Rescued after arriving as a stray in Bakersfield, Hank has left a difficult past behind. His foster and vet believe he experienced some mistreatment, but today he is thriving in a calm, caring home. He is especially fond of women but will form a deep bond with any kind, patient person.
Ideal Home
Hank would flourish in a quiet, child-free home, ideally with someone who is around at least part of the day. He’s the perfect work-from-home buddy—present, peaceful, and loyal. He gets along well with his two Labrador foster sisters, but he would shine as the only dog, soaking up all the love. He’s gentle and respectful with the girls—never taking toys or food—but he’ll politely nudge them aside to offer you his head for pets.
Daily Life With Hank
• Off-leash reliable and great indoors for long stretches
• Uses a doggy door like a pro
• Not a crate guy—he’ll kindly tell you he doesn’t need one
• Sleeps soundly on his dog bed in his foster’s room (and loves an invited cuddle, always ending up upside down!)
• Excellent traveler—hops into the car or Jeep with ease and rides calmly
• Cats: Experience unknown
Why Hank?
Let’s break the stigma around big black dogs—especially seniors. Dogs like Hank are often overlooked, yet they make the most devoted companions and bond deeply with their person. Hank has so much love left to give and is ready for many more years of adventure, affection, and loyal companionship.

From Kern County Shelter
_edited.jpg)
Blossom is a sweet, playful, and athletic 1+ year-old female Black Lab mix who originally came from the Kern County Animal Shelter with her litter of puppies. Now that her babies are safe, this beautiful girl is ready for her own forever family. She’s a happy, affectionate dog who loves to please her humans and is already well on her way with basic obedience. She rides well in the car, walks nicely on leash. Blossom is good with other dogs but particularly loves larger dog companions and she is best with children 10 yrs or older or confident handlers (she’s a happy, slightly mouthy teen).. She is playful, athletic and fun loving. Blossom is learning to control her excitement (like little happy jumps!) and responds beautifully to treats, praise, and routines. She would thrive with continued structure + affection — and will reward you with endless loyalty, joy, and cuddles.
Blossom is ready to blossom in a home where she can continue to learn, play, and cuddle. If you’ve been looking for an all-around great family dog to grow with, she’s your girl.

Sara (aka Sahara)
Female Yellow Lab
1 Year
Meet Sara (aka Sahara)
If you’re looking for a young, happy, affectionate Labrador who’s ready to start her real life, Sara might be the perfect match.
Sara is fun, silly, and full of personality. She loves chasing balls, proudly carrying around her toys, and turning soft stuffies into “no-nose stuffies.” She shakes hands, adores chew bones, and can do a hilarious four-paw leap that will make you laugh every time. She’s the kind of dog who brings instant joy into a home.
Although her paperwork lists her as Sahara, her foster family calls her Sara to give her a fresh start—she deserves a name filled with kindness, not tied to a difficult past. Despite her rough beginning, Sara has blossomed beautifully in foster care. Now that she’s finally experiencing freedom, affection, and routine, her young-dog energy shines. She’s eager to learn, eager to connect, and eager to be part of a family.
Sara is crate trained, uses the dog door, knows sit and come, and loves car rides. Like any 1-year-old Lab, she’ll benefit from continued training as she learns manners and life skills. A patient adopter, confident handler, or anyone excited to guide a young dog would be a wonderful match. Doggie school would help her thrive.
Once she’s exercised, Sara becomes a sweet, snuggly couch buddy. She loves closeness, gives lots of kisses, and melts into affection. She is sensitive, grateful, and wants nothing more than to be someone’s beloved dog.
If you’re ready to give a beautiful young Labrador her second chance—and be rewarded with loyalty, laughter, and love—Sara is ready to meet you.
