CARSON

I first set eyes on Carson when I arrived at my parents’ house for Thanksgiving 2010. He had the saddest look on his face, but as I sat there and petted him you could tell he was a sweet, kind pup who just needed a chance. I asked my mom what the story was on him and she informed me that he had just been dropped off and that he was to be treated for heart worm and needed a calm, quiet place to recover. I immediately offered to foster him. I just couldn’t say no to those eyes! My roommate and I already had 2 dogs of our own, but we took Carson in temporarily to nurse him back to health. When we first brought him home he was really shy and quiet. My mom said it was partially due to the treatment. But sure enough, as Carson started to feel better he started opening up. After about a month of recovery he was really starting to show his true colors. He even barked at his first squirrel! Once he made his full recovery my mom started to ask when we were going to bring him to adoption events. I had excuse after excuse, then the other folks at the events started asking about him, and then finally I had to face the music…. Needless to say, I adopted him. He gets a long great with his 2 big sister’s Mia and Roxy. He is the most loyal and loveable boy. Well loyal until we get to the dog park, then he goes off befriending every dog and human in the park. He only remembers I’m there when it’s time to go home. He loves long walks and especially loves tromping through bushes head first. He went on his first hike this past weekend and had a BLAST! He lead the pack over fallen trees and up and over icy boulders. All the while staying close to his mom. I can’t wait to take him camping this summer, he’s the best heated blanket a girl could ask for! I could not have asked for a better companion and new addition to the family. This is my second Lab I’ve adopted from CCLRR, and I can guarantee he will not be my last. -Brie Grossman

PONGO

Good Morning Nancy,
I thought I would share a few pics of Pongo and Penny.

We love our big boy! He has been a great challenge for us and still is.
We know one day he will have great manners.

When we first got him (over a year ago)he weighed in at 132. Today he weighs 100 lbs.
We have tried really hard to get him into the nineties, but it is not happening. No matter how many times we exercise him he still breaks 100 lbs.

He is a great companion and a wonderful watch dog. He rarely barks, but when he does everyone listens. haha

I want to thank you for him. He is so loving and kind to our grandchildren and to Miss Penny. He is a great addition to our family.
Thanks again, Donna

BECKETT

Dear CCLRR,

Beckett had a truly awful and painful story before he was rescued—it is a miracle that he even survived! I sincerely believe that it was the love and patience of his foster, Diane, that brought him back, and I have been so amazingly fortunate to be able to continue that progress with him. He had been with her for almost a year when I began my search for a Lab companion. I eventually found CCLRR’s website. Week after week I looked at the list of available dogs, and every week I would linger on one in particular. His name was Hunter, and his story and photos pulled at something in me every time I looked at them. I wondered why he wasn't getting adopted, but now I like to think he was maybe just waiting for me!

Well, I finally got up the nerve to submit my own application and call about him, and the day I went to meet him was amazing. He stole my heart within about five minutes. I worried that he might respond to me only with fear, but with a little nudging, he eventually let me stroke his silky ears, and the rest was love!

He never really responded to his original given name, so I was encouraged to give him a new name along with his new start. I finally settled on Beckett, after the brilliant Nobel Prize winning author, Samuel Beckett. The thing about Samuel Beckett’s writing is that, even though it sometimes seems to be rooted in human despair and misery, at the true heart of the language is always an astounding sense of humor and a very deep motivation to persist, despite even the most treacherous of circumstances. In one of his novels, The Unnamable, he even writes, “I can’t go on. I’ll go on.”

Well, when I look at my beautiful Beckett, I am reminded of his namesake’s words. This boy has been through so much and has never given up. What could easily have broken him did not, and now, with every day, he brings me so much laughter, joy, and a tremendous lightness to my heart.

He was once afraid of absolutely everything. The smallest noise would startle him and it would take him an hour to relax again. Diane helped him so much with letting him know that no one would ever hurt him again. He has only continued this progress ever since I brought him home. He has truly blossomed, and he becomes more of a confident Lab every day—goofy, loyal, so sweet, and sometimes even a bit mischievous!

He is an absolutely amazing guy, and there have been so many little victories to celebrate with him over the past few months. I will never forget the first time that we made it to the park down the street; Beckett loved romping around on the grass and meeting some of the other dogs who we passed along the way. We try to make it there every day, now. I have introduced him to stairs, and he now sleeps in my bedroom. Every morning, as soon as he hears me start to wake up, he comes on over, tail wagging and nose wet, and rests his head on the side of my bed. He will make eye contact with his dazzling brown eyes. He rides in a car now with ease. But, most importantly, I think, is that he is learning what it is to play. Before rescue, he was never even given the chance. He hardly knew what to do with toys. After a long time spent watching my roommate’s dog, Lila, play in the backyard, he took some tentative first steps toward the stuffed raccoon toy. This went on until, one day, he picked it up and trotted it back to me, its little bell jingling the whole way. I almost fell over in shock!

Now, he chases balls, plays with Lila when she nips at his ears in encouragement, and sweetly rests his head in my lap after a long trip to the park. In just a few words: he is nothing short of a miracle. He is a true survivor in every sense of the word, and he has the most gentle, loving soul. I truly believe that we were meant to find one another, because every day he teaches me things I don’t think I ever would have known without him. I once saw a bumper sticker that had a paw print on it and the words, “who rescued who?” and this could not be more applicable when it comes to Beckett and me.

Thank you, Diane and CCLRR, for not giving up
on this stunning boy. He is an absolute champion and a total rock star, and the love I encounter with him every day has been infinitely healing for both of us.

Welcome home, Beckett.

Sincerely,

Lauren

P.S. Attached are a few pictures of Beckett since he's been here. He recently celebrated Thanksgiving with my family, and he loved the stuffed turkey that his grandma bought him!

SNACKY JACK

Hi Tracy!

I've been meaning for the past couple of weeks to email an update on Jack to CCLRR and kept forgetting. Jack has fit in to our family very well. My kids, especially my youngest daughter, loves him so much and they are so cute together. I was warned when we took him home that he was a "mans" dog and, let me tell you, that could not be truer words! That took a little getting used to on my husbands part, but everything has settled down nicely. He's so cute with his little stuffed animals, it cracks me up. We bought him a couple the day we picked him up but he also managed to sneak a couple from the kids stockpile as well. :)

Here are a few pictures of Jack for you to share. He's losing weight nicely and is not quite as "stout" as he was last month. :) Feel free to contact me anytime for future updates Tracy.

Take care and Happy Holidays!!

CODY

Kim,

Thought you would like to see how handsome and happy our big guy is one year after we adopted him. It is hard to believe that we have had him a year and that he is 18 months old. He brings great joy to our lives and makes us laugh every day. He is still his goofy wobbly self and still very much a puppy. He has great character and his handicap hasn't slowed him down a bit. Think he weighs about 80 lbs now and is still growing.

Hope you and your family are well and that you are still working to find homes for more wonderful dogs like Cody.

TALLY

Hi Erika,

Just wanted to give you an update on Tally. She is a wonderful, happy dog. She is such an important part of our family. We enjoy and love her so much. You told me that she was a 'bullet-proof' dog and you were right. Tally really has zero bad habits. Thanks again for your part in bringing her to us.

Zander

We thought you might like an update. Zander finished his antibiotics, etc. and we took him in to the vet. He weighed in at 88 pounds, but that was about 3 weeks ago. We figure he is down to 82-84 pounds now. He checked out just fine at the vet's office. When offered a low calorie treat on the way out, he swallowed it whole. He defintely likes food.

Zander's energy level picked up some once he was off his medicine and he stopped panting so much as well. He is getting exercise much more regularly and continues to get more active. He does tend to get wiped out after walks and likes to sleep.

We have learned that Zander is a Conformation or English Labrador rather than a Field or American Labrador and this explains why he is shorter and stockier. He has no interest in retrieving either, but the boys want to try to work on that. One web site notes that field-bred Labradors are commonly higher energy and more high-strung compared to the Labrador bred for conformation showing, and as a consequence may be more suited to working relationships than being a "family pett<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet>".
Zander is definitely not field-bred based on his stature and temperment and is a great family pet. It is clear that he is very smart and loves the attention he gets. He has figured out now that it is colder that when my
wife puts on her coat that she is getting ready to leave the house and follows her around the house so as to not be left behind.

In short, everyone loves Zander, including family and friends. He fits our family well and we are quite happy to have found him. Thanks for taking him in from the shelter.

The Dunns

JACK

Halloween is the second anniversary of Jack’s move to his forever home, thanks to the great people at CCLRR!

Winter and the Great Northwest agree with our now nine-year-old guy with the huge appetite, big barker, singer of Christmas Carols and very long Dudley nose (says it doesn’t bother him that the other two pups call him “Eraser Nose”).

Jack still hauls 85-90 pounds around the yard, barking ferociously at any bird that dares land on his grass or his fence (we’re certain he would stop short and be mystified if the birds failed to fly away).

He had surgery for an ulcer on one of his eyes earlier in the year (he’s fine now) and had to wear a cone for a week, which left several dents in walls and, of course, necessitated the removal of all small objects from coffee and end tables, before he could accomplish the removal with a sweep of the cone. Very funny watching him eat while wearing the cone!

As those who knew him may recall, he continues to stay very close to us – out of sight is a little too far away for our Jack. Standing in the middle of doorways to keep an eye on us is one of his favorite (but frustrating) habits. Irena and her family will be pleased to know, Jack continues to move dog furniture around the house. Dog beds are quite likely to end up in the kitchen or one of the bathrooms when Jack goes on a tear.

From day one of his adoption, we often told him “Jack’s a pretty good dog”. At the advent of his second anniversary with us, we decided to promote him and now let him know,”Jack’s a very good dog”. We know this will probably call for more bed moving, but it’s well worth it.

Thanks again for hooking us up with this lovable old Lab.

Lilly, Shasta and Foster

Please everybody think about adopting a senior dog...they ask so little and give so much.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to update you on Lilly, Shasta, and Foster. I promised you a photo when I adopted them. They adjusted very quickly to the routine except I think the first couple of weeks they got tired easily from doing all of the chores around the property. Foster can now jump up on one of the retaining walls next to the barn--he couldn't even come close when he first arrived--he is so active it is great to see how he is jumping and running around the property. Shasta is busy chasing squirrels and my dog training pigeons--anything that flys, runs, or jumps (yes she is keeping my frog population in check). And Lilly, you would not believe how active she is ---she runs --yes runs---and jumps and plays around.

I can't begin to tell you how lucky I am to have adopted these three wonderful companions. I won't hesitate to adopt seniors in the future as well, in fact I plan on it. Some folks say that older dogs have a lot more baggage---this may be true in some circumstances but I firmly believe that dogs only know what we teach them and what we don't teach them. Once they learn the rules and understand them they are quick to follow them.

Best of all senior dogs are excellent company at tea parties---they stick around for as long as you want (well they may sleep through most of it though).

Take care. Karen.

SHADOW

Sat Oct 1st Carters Pet Mart in Stockton hosted a "Customer Appreciation Day" Booths, free hot dogs and lots of dogs. We took our Rescue booth and joined the fun. WELL THEY HAD SPLASH DOGS! A huge pool, ramp and contest for the longest water entry. It was fabulous. Our very own Rescue "Orphan" Shadow, adopted by Vic and Carrie Mettler of Vicarmont Winery in Lodi competed for the first time with Carrie handling. He had several practice runs and "Got It" the first time. Here are the Mettlers with Shadow and his blue Ribbon....Shadow made a jump of 19' 1" a fabulous jump for a novice and he won TWICE CONGRATULATIONS

LILLY

We think we've seen it all but sometimes we just stop and want to scream........ Lilly--a 12 year old female was taken to the shelter by her 'owners' to be put down because she was old! This sweet girl's tail never stops wagging unless she is asleep. And thanks to Karen and her huge heart, Lilly, Foster and Shasta, all older rescued labs, have been given a second chance to live the rest of their lives in a home filled with love! This is what her new mom has to say.

Lilly as you can imagine is doing great. She is such a love. She just goes wherever I go--no complaints. I can't believe how much stamina she has--we walk all over this 10 acre property and she just keeps her steady pace. When I ride my horse I do have to tie her up next to the arena ..... the first day she followed me all over and got tired. When we play ball every afternoon with all the dogs--I throw about 10 balls simultaneously--and all the dogs run all over the place-they are so busy they ignore each other and get a good daily dose of running and playing. Lilly just stays right by my side while I throw the balls---kind of like the Supervisor. She has quickly learned the routine---take a nap when you can because the rest of the time we are busy doing stuff. My daughter thought Lilly needed a baby blanket the other day--so I got this photo.

TANNER (aka Frankie)

This came to Frankie's foster...boy we love to hear about our "orphans" Frankie was so terrified of everything...he and his sister were abandoned as pups on the side of a busy road....well look at him now!

Lisa,

Thank you for inquiring about Frankie (he's Tanner to us). He is doing so much better and is a beloved member of our Family! Tanner is still a fearful, anxious pup -- for example, I swear he *knows* it is Friday and the garbage trucks will be here soon to torment him. He is still getting used to noises in the neighborhood and will hide when people are over. But he's becoming more comfortable in our house and recently, more playful indoors. I will come home from running errands and find Tanner on my bed and he's brought all of his toys up there. LOL! Here is the best news, Tanner loves to ride in the car, play fetch, hang out with other dogs, and hike and swim at Folsom Lake. Fetching, swimming, out in nature, and with other dogs, Tanner is so happy and confident! I've attached a few pics that were taken this week at the park.

Regards,
Linnea

MUFFIN

Hi Jeanine,

Was going to call or write after a week with Muffin, but it's been such a great experience ...so far, that I wanted to share it with you.

Muffin has already learned to go potty! The first day and yesterday she messed-up a few times in the house, but am sure she knows now that outside is where she does her business. I think one of the things that made it tough was how she likes to be at one's side all the time. She also likes her privacy when she poops and that was a definite conflict for her. I've learned when it is that she needs to poop and walk her out in the yard on the dirt and then she sort of sneaks off and is back in just a couple of minutes still doing the doggie mash. She's been pooping along the perimeter of the fence where Chuck had been throwing the doggie poop from Sarah to keep the wild animals out of the yard. It's like she has ESP! Everybody just loves her! She is just the sweetest doggie ...but then you knew that anyway.

Right off the bat our cats warmed up to her. They were so used to taking off when we had dog visitors before, but I walked her in the yard the first night and while the cats were a little leery, Muffin just kind of glanced at then and walked on by. After that they started following her around to see what was up and now while I think Muffin could easily take or leave the cats, the cats have no fear of being around her and no hesitation with coming in the house with Muffin nearby. Halaloulla!

I want to thank you right now for allowing Chuck and me to be the new doggie daddies for Muffin. Thanks also for your confidence that it was a good move for her. Actually it's a really good move for ALL of us!

I'm assuming that I'll be getting her antibiotics in the mail tomorrow or the next day. She'll have here first check-up when she gets the stitches out next week. Would you check and see if there's a vet. in Lake Co. that is affiliated with Lab Rescue? If not then Dr. Takatsuki of Main St. Veterinary will be her new doggie Dr..

Thanks for everything! I keep telling Muffin "you're fabulous". I can't help but think that you too Jeanine are fabulous also for all you do for our four-legged friends!

Fondly,

Jim & Chuck

Bella (and Barney)

Hi Jackie,

Just had to share these pictures with you. Don't know if you remember Bella, the 2-time "loser" with CCLRR. She just celebrated her sixth anniversary with us, followed by her 7th birthday. She is such a love and we are thrilled to have her in our lives. I think her favorite "quote" would be "Excuse me, but perhaps you don't see my tiara!" She truly is a princess. Barney is awesome also. He just turned 9 and will celebrate 7 years with us next month, also (of course) a CCLRR alumnus. Two huge success stories.

We miss the Rescue having their booth at Davis since we used to love taking
Barney and Bella up there to visit.

Hope all is well with you,
Sue

JOSIE

Hello from Pacifica, CA my name is Josie (formerly Nova) and I just wanted to let you know how happy I am in my new forever home.  I will be totally honest I was very sad when my new family drove away from my foster mama’s house.  I did not understand where I was going or why I had to leave. I was getting very used to my two new brothers Lincoln (Golden Retriever) and Griffin (German Sheppard). My foster mama Diane and her friend Rosemarie took such good care of me and I was learning so much from all of them. My foster family was sad and so was my new family everyone one crying and I was so confused and sad as to why I had to leave!  Before them my life was not a very happy one I was chained in a field, it was at least 100 degrees out and I had to use my drinking water to cool off in which did not leave much for me to drink,  I barely got any food, and I was covered in ticks  and to top it all off I was surrounded by some not very nice dogs so I am sure you can understand my fear when I was being taken away from the only happy place I have ever known…turns out though there is more than one happy place in this world and my forever home is a very happy place.

I have a new chocolate lab brother and two boys named Jake & Anthony.  Jake and Anthony loved me the second they saw me…Guinness my new lab brother loved me too but he just did not want to show it right away.  My new home is very warm and cozy.  I have lost of plush toys to play with (they are my favorite) my own bed, I get fed twice a day and I get all kinds of love! In the morning I wake my mom and dad up with one of my plush toys in my mouth ready to play. Sometimes they are not ready to play so I have to lay back down until they are ready.  My new dad gives me kisses all the time and my new mama is always rubbing my ears all I have to do it go up to her and put my face on her lap it is the best! My dad lets me get up on the couch with him and Guinness and we all sit together and take naps and watch TV.  They told me that the couch is the only furniture I can get on and I love it! I share a big backyard with Guinness we have matching dog houses. We chase each other around and I like to nibble on his ears!

On my third day at my new home I got into a little trouble.  I will spare you the details but my new mama let me know what I did was wrong but she still loves me very much…They said I was almost two but my new vet thinks I am closer to 1 year old so that helps explain the trouble I got into a little better!  My new family is helping me learn the dos and don’ts and I am learning very quickly.

My mom and dad take me on long walks and we went to this place called the beach I had never seen the beach before but I love it there.  My dad took me off leash and I got to run in the sand.  I was a very good girl every time they called me I went right to them even after I started to chase a bird! My new dad is building us a new home on 9 acres and I cannot wait to live there he takes me and Guinness there to run off leash and I feel so grown up so I can only imagine how nice it will be to live there.

Thank you CCLRR for coming to my rescue and thank you to my foster family for all the love and care you gave me when you came to get me I was in pretty bad shape.  My foster family also made sure that they found me the right forever home and I am forever grateful for that…I love my new family but will never forget those who made sure I made it here safe and sound!

ELMO

Elmo has been doing great with us! At first, he was quite shy and reserved, but still happy and friendly. He's come out of his shell and is more active now. We take him out on long walks and are planning on taking him hiking eventually. He's lost 6lbs and is an even 100lbs! He's not quite used to water yet, but he's learned how to retrieve balls and other new tricks (we're working on paw shakes right now.) His personality is so amazing! He lives only to please the person he's next to (he doesn't discriminate) and he is so good around people. He's not aggressive in the least towards us, but will bark at night if strangers walk past the house. He's good security! We're so fortunate to have such a wonderful doggie like him! Thank you CCLRR!!!!

ARTHUR

We just wanted to update you on our rescue of a senior dog back on 3/2011.

We came to look at a a young lab and fell in love with a black lab 10 years old named "Arthur" his foster mom Jackie did a great job with him and he is now a part of our Family!
He loves his belly rubbed, car rides, long walks and water.
He also likes to help me harvest our vegetable garden sometimes stealing vegetables along the way.
He has brought us so much joy and we hope he lives a long happy life.....

Thank you Very Much

The Brown's

Harley

This was Bubba a "throw away Lab" from the Stockton Shelter....here's what his owners have to say:
The pictures are of Harley, Katie and Toblee. We all walk together. From the beginning, the dogs agreed to a certain order. Toblee on the left, one nose in front of Harley, then Katie on the right. No matter where we walk to, they like that order - Toblee, Harley then Katie - and they put themselves in it.

Harley has an important job. He carries our supplies in his backpack. He carries water, doggie bags and treats for the horses. We stop to feed the horses baby carrots and sugar cubes. As we approach the horses, Toblee barks, thinking she will run them off. The horses know they get treats from us and wait for us on most days. Once we are there Toblee acts as if they are all old friends.

Harley is so handsome with his backpack. Other dog walkers and sometimes a car stops us to ask if the dogs are trained - meaning 'Are they service dogs?' I just smile and say no, but they are known to do tricks for food! I explain that Harley has an important job and carries our supplies. It's quite a site to see all 3 of them together on a walk. Then they ask 'How can you walk 3 big dogs?' I smile again and explain that they are Labs and are quite gentle.

On the way back home, we stop at the mailbox, which is 1/2 way down the street, and Harley carries the mail for us.

Take care,
Tamera & John

Hi Connie and Mike,
Wanted to let you know that Josie is doing well and I LOVE her! She is sleeping in my office with me right now. We are walking 2x a day, she is eating well, hangs out in her open crate, is able to be on my enclosed patio by herself, is sleeping all night w/o a noise in her crate and is meeting lots of people and other dogs. She is great with my cats-meaning she isn't impressed one way or the other-which is a relief for the cats. They are actually traveling in her space now. They are hesitant but she is absolutely ignoring them… I thank you so much for this. We will start obedience training in a few weeks.

I am taking her to the College with me-2x so far -again tonight. She waited in the office where several people were very excited to care for her and where many people come and go. She got lots of attention. She waits with her front paws crossed and is very adorable. Later she sat in my class while I taught. I hope to take her with me frequently since she is so well-behaved. I've attached pix of Josie when she went to Father's Day with my family and my sister's dog, Marley, and she got to run in a big yard. We'll do the same on Sunday and introduce her to my friend's labs :)
She is beginning to play with balls and has discovered the joys of wet laundry that has fallen on the floor....my fault but very funny to watch. She does know some commands and that is a great start. She is really smart! The bathroom routine is working well and she is learning to travel in the car. She does OK in the car but is not happy getting into it yet. I assume this will improve in time and I just got some special car treats to encourage getting into the car.

I have had several questions about her- "What a beautiful girl" and "Tell me where you got her". I am happy to give your website address and pass out cards. You can send more if you like.

It’s been 9 days so far and I feel like she has been part of my home for much longer. This has been the easiest transition I have experienced with either dogs or cats. I am so pleased to have a Lab again after 6 very dull years w/o one so thank you for such a wonderful baby! Wanted to mention that my previous dogs have been named Joe, Joey, Josie and I have a cat named Joe also. All but the cat have been some version of a lab but none as beautiful or sweet tempered and easy as this Josie. When I saw the description of Josie and her name, I felt this was meant to be! Thank you!

Jeanne

DUNCAN

Greetings from sunny southern California! I wanted to update you on my great life with my forever family. A year ago I was with Lab Rescue and living with a wonderful foster family when I was swooped up by a very nice grandma. This grandma knew I was the perfect match for her two grandsons and their parents and boy, oh boy was she ever right! When I was with Lab Rescue my name was Dakota but my forever family has named me Duncan. They are big basketball fans over here and I am named after the one and only Tim Duncan
.

I wanted to let you know what I have been doing this last year. I have two boys ages 7 and 9 and they love me to pieces. We start each morning with a belly rub and ear massage and then work our way to breakfast. Before school we play basketball and dog toy throwing and then we all get in the car for the drive to school. My new mom in my human family is fantastic. After we take the boys to school we head out for our daily walk or run. On Tuesday mornings she takes me for a play date at the local park. This is where I get to hang out with other labs and golden retriever friends. My favorite guy in the family is my new human dad. I stick close with him wherever he goes. He’s always up for a walk or run or just hanging out with the neighbors. I make sure he doesn’t forget to take me along. We’re great pals.

The family takes me lots of places. Our house is close to trails and the forest so we often go on hikes and walks around the nearby lake. I know most of us labs really enjoy a good swim or fetch with a tennis ball, I am however, not one of those labs. I hate the water, including sprinklers and I don’t fetch, it’s just not in me. I prefer chasing the guy who’s chasing the ball; now that’s real fun. I do love my chewy toys and I’m very good at keeping the local critters out of the yard. (I won’t mention the details, my human mom wasn’t so happy about some of the critters I was eating.) The boys also made up a game for me called ‘go, go, go.’ This is when I race around the entire yard as fast as I can until I collapse. Whew! I love that one! I also get to see all the baseball and soccer games my boys play and basically go where the family is going. I’m always up for a field trip.

So that’s all from Camp Cushy and Comfy down here in Orange County. I must be the happiest labby around and my family seems happy with me too. They sure hug and kiss me all the time and I definitely feel like one of the family. Thank you CCLRR for hooking me up with the Berlins, I can’t imagine a day with out them and I’m pretty sure they feel the same way about me!!

Until next time….Word is we are doing some camping this summer, I can’t wait!

Love,
Duncan

DAYTON

It is as if Dayton has always been with us. I am in love with him. He and Buddy are great companions. Kayla is great with him too. I bought him a bed and a bunch of toys. He appears to be in doggie bliss as he should be. I am looking forward to getting some weight on him and nursing him back to his full self. And...you are right...he does snore. Oh my goodness. I have never heard a dog snore so much. It is also very apparent that he loves anything that squeaks. My goodness...he goes on and on and on making things squeak. He and Buddy walk together like pros! What a lover he is! I cuddled him as I brushed him today and he just melted into my arms. All I know is he is meant to be with us...no question.

I am sorry you and Irena have recently gone through what you have gone through. Sadly, I do not expect Kayla to make it through the week. I am sure she could because she is so lab tough like that but it just pains me every time I have to clean her or carry her outside. . I know what I have to do, but The pain involved with letting her go is almost too much for me to bear.

Thank you again to CCLRR for taking in and caring for Buddy and Dayton until I could get to them. They are amazing dogs and both have stolen my heart in their own special way.

-Kristin

TALLY

Hi Debbie,

Just wanted to let you know how Tally (formerly Lady) is doing. She has graduated from her first training class at Petco, and the other weekend we took her on her first road trip. We went to visit family in SoCal, and also watched a couple of stages of the Tour of California. She was a very good girl! We even took her to a restaurant and she sat patiently while we ate (well, for most of the time!). Note the special doggy treats they brought her!

Best wishes,
Gillian

ISHI

Samantha, now Ishi, came into rescue when her people abandoned her sister, Janie, and her, in a kennel in the snow with no food or shelter. Neighbors found them and cared for them till we could get rescue them. The skinny, scrawny dog has blossomed into a beautiful lab--what a transformation! It's obvious that love, training, and lots of ball playing is what this sweet dog needed. Thank you for sharing your story.

Hi Debbie,
Ishi's adoption has been a success! She is a great dog with an extreme attachment to the B-A-L-L and especially likes squeaking balls. In fact the first thing she did when she went into Petco for the first time was grab some squeaky balls and start squeaking them like mad. The shoe relocating has stopped and her ribs are no longer showing. We really love Ishi and we are probably going to get another Lab from you guys!! Your rescue is great and we plan to donate more with our next dog's adoption fee. You guys are really just great. I gotta go throw the ball for my dog!! Bye!!

CASEY (formerly Cammie)

Hi Matt, I wanted to give you an update on Cammie (I renamed her Casey). She is doing very well & has adjusted to her new home. I signed her up for some obedience classes & hired a private trainer that comes to my house and is training both of us :) She is a fast learner. We are both getting lots of exercise on our daily walks & fetching balls. She is still happy as ever & always smiling. I am working with her on her barking, however she has improved as she no longer barks when I leave the house. She has lots of new toys, I am trying not to spoil her too much. Thank you for giving me such a happy, loving dog. It is so nice to come home to her after a long day at work :) I hope all is well with you & the rescue.

ZOEY (formerly Trixie)

Hello Matt, I thought I would drop you a note to let you know Trixie is doing. We changed her name to Zoey, but there are times I think Bolt would have been more appropriate as she loves to try to bolt out the the door, it's her favorite game :-D. We've been giving her fish oil with dinner every day and her fur is filling in and getting softer. Downside to this is she has a faint fish smell when she gets a bath, small price to pay for better fur. We've been taking her to dog school and she's been learning the usual sit, stay, come; I can even take her for a "walk" instead of me being dragged. She can be a bit of work at times as she will get excited over the littlest things and bound around the house or yard crashing into things and other house mates, but she can also a lot of affection and usually ends up sleeping by us in the evening while we're watching TV. It's times like these we can see that she will be a great dog as she grows out of the puppy craziness.

JET / ENZO

Jet (now renamed to Enzo) had a great night! No accidents....he is such a fun dog and soo very sweet. You can tell that he has been hit...he is very hand shy at times, but I am sure that with constant love he will get over that....and trust etc.

He is doing great with the cat...he is mostly just interested in smelling her when we visit my mom etc. Him and the other dog Aniella, Mom's corgi female, get along famously. He really does not show anyyy interest in annny dogs...its like they dont exist..its really funny....

When we stopped at Petsmart he met a gorgeous black lab female..Chloe...that was super cute.

Everyoneeee stops us...with omg he is gorgeous!!!!! It was fun. He really enjoyed visiting the cats at petsmart and the fish/hamsters.

The kids love him and he is very loving. He lovesss men! He is very affectionate with me too but he gives men extra kisses n stuff its funny.

He loves the area that we live in because its almost like yosemite with the trees and all of the smells. (Live in Copperopolis, Ca one block from Lake Tulloch).

When we took him to the lake he bounced RIGHT in and just has a party by himself...it was hilarious. We had him on a a 50' lead and he loved to go chase that ball and bring it back and he is great at relinquishing it as well! Bonus!!

He is spoiled and sooooooo well behaved!
Never have we had such a cooperative dog!!!

We feel so blessed! Thank you soo much.

SMOKEY

We are amazed at how quickly he's settled in! He seems perfectly happy with everything and we're delighted with him. He's so communicative. It's easy to understand what he wants and doesn't want
and he seems to understand us even when it's obvious he's not hearing a word we're saying.

We learned the first night that we were going to have trouble getting him upstairs to our bedroom. That right leg is not cooperative on stairs. We managed to hoist him up to the bedroom where he went
right to his bed and fell asleep. The next night he refused to go upstairs and instead went into our downstairs TV room and laid down on a bed there. He hadn't changed position when I went down to check on him the next morning. Since then, he goes right into that room and onto that bed at night.

He's eating well and goes on long walks through a park and into an undeveloped area where he can be off lead and there's lots to see and smell. He got more than he bargained for on Wednesday when his curiosity led him to an open irrigation ditch which hadn't been there the last time I was out. He climbed up to look and promptly fell in! He managed to climb out and onto the other side where I couldn't get to him. I didn't have to though since he fell in again. and swam a few feet to the end where I could help him out. We were both wet and muddy but none of it seemed to phase him!

He's so unflappable and so cuddly. We just love him and hope to keep him healthy and with us for a long time. He's also fallen in love with our grandson and tried to get in the car when Jess left this afternoon.

We appreciate all the love and great care you've given him and we look forward to seeing you again on the 24th. I know he'll be excited to be back "home" with you and his friends while we're gone.

Success Story Bruce from his former foster

This is a wonderful success story of Bruce. He was afraid of his own shadow
and now look at him!!!! You would never know he was the same lab.

Thought I'd share the photo's of Bruce with his little hiking packs my Son
bought for him when they go camping and hiking.....he looks soooooooooo cute
and my Nate says Bruce acts so professional when Nate puts the packs on him,
just like he's special, which he is, he carries his own water, water bowl,
treats and then have fun....Bruce has made a huge difference in their lives
he's like their child.....

Nate and Kristin, Bruce's owners, took him to a professional trainer. He is
coming along just fine. It shows any dog can be great with the right
owners.
He sleeps in Nat and Kristin bed in the middle. He is their child!!!

CHARLIE

Hello all,

Sorry for the delay in getting out some pictures of Charlie, we've been busy with him. As you guessed we decided to rename him Charlie. He is doing really well! We have been taking him to obedience classes and he is a fast learner as you know. Kristen takes him on daily runs and we also have been hiking with him. He likes the cat but the cat isn't to keen on him yet, but they are usually very civil together. Charlie really wants to play with him and the cat is not having it. This week he has really started to settle in and can be left unattended or off leash in the house without trying to put everything in his mouth.

Enjoy,

Darrell

L EO

As we reach the six month mark with Leo, I thought I'd send an update along. In short, we can't imagine a more perfect pet for our family. He so enjoys just going along with whatever we do, and he is such a pleasure to be around -- whether it's at home, walking, picking the kids up from school or hanging out at soccer/baseball practice. (Though baseball practice is harder for him because he wants to fetch balls, and part of his pack are the one throwing them!!)

He came so well trained but soon learned we are a pretty lenient family. He prefers the leather chair to his bed during the day and sleeps with Joey at night. No more of that dog bed stuff for him (unless we have company!). And, he prefers to be a lap dog when he can. We are really looking forward to summer when we are camping and going to our friend's lake house, where he will join us and learn to jump in the water. (He still waits for permission to get in the pool - how we will keep it - then politely gets in at the steps.)

My kids adore him, and because they help with his care (feeding, brushing, walking with us), it has taught them good lessons in responsibility. Please remember that Gianni has four hours of community service that he has to do, and we are more than willing to help with other labbies.

I'll send photos when I find the right ones. Thank you again for your help in bringing such love to our family.

Gina Vanacore

PS Leo also loves his new friend, Maizy, adopted from Lab Rescue by our adjacent neighbors, Brian & Debbie Seifert. They're good "fence friends" and have had a playdate or two.

BUDDY

It's been over a year now since we adopted Buddy, and he is just such a wonderful boy! We just couldn't be happier. He has such a sweet innocence about him, and just wants to be loved. He is so good natured
and happy all the time, and is very easy going. He only barks when he wants to play, and is otherwise quiet and mellow. He is also a silly boy, and loves to make us laugh at him. He is such a good boy, and is so happy when he knows we are pleased with him and that he has been good. He is always obedient and stays within his boundaries with no arguments, and is easily corrected with simply a soft spoken "ah-ah". He is respectful to our 11 year old, Sadie, and seems to idolize her and follows her lead. He will look to her to see if he should react to anything, whether it be excitement or alarm. He loves everybody and is so friendly to everyone he meets. While he enjoys a good game of fetch with his favorite ball, when he is done fetching he will look up at me as if to say, "You might want to go pick that up. I'm done now." His favorite thing of all is just to be with us, doing whatever it is we are doing, whether it is working outside in the garden or watching TV in the evenings. He has decided he is a lap dog, and every night we have "Baby Buddy Time", when I will sit in my recliner to watch TV and he will climb up in my lap and lay there until it is time to go to bed. If I am off doing other things when he feels it is Baby Buddy Time, he will sit in front of my recliner with his chin resting on the seat, and just wait. More often than I care to admit, I have seen that chin resting on the seat with those soulful eyes looking at me, and have stopped doing my chores just to sit down and have him in my lap. He is such a joy to be around, and we find ourselves laughing at him several times a day. He has enriched not only the lives of my husband and me, but also our Sadie. At 11 years old, she is more interested in laying on the couch, but she enjoys a good game of play with him, sometimes initiating it herself. Buddy has become a good companion for Sadie, and has made her more energetic and more interested in life. Thanks for everything you did to bring this wonderful boy into our lives. We can't imagine life without him!

Best regards,

Rudy and Bev Herrera

MOLLY
We have had Molly for 1 ½ weeks now. However it seems as though she has been a part of our lives a lot longer. She has accepted us as her family from day one. We are truly blessed with having found such an unassuming friend. She has brought love and joy to us every day since we met her.
Molly needs some training with basic commands such as sit and stay, but has already made great strides in understanding what is expected of her. She is full of energy, and anytime, someone will throw a ball for her, it will help make her day. And the nice thing is she drops the ball at our feet so we can throw it again. No running after her to try to get it back. She is smart enough to know that if she wants to give chase, she must give it back to be thrown. She and I have hiked more than 35 miles already together and I don’t think she even feels it. But I sure do!
Molly is a wonderful companion, and thank goodness a great cuddler too! She has really gotten into our hearts in a big way, and we are very, very thankful to C.C.Lab Rescue for saving her, and giving us the chance to meet her. She will be cherished by us forever as all good friends should be. Thanks again to all the wonderful dedicated volunteers out there for helping our animal friends, you are truly special.

SKIPPY

Mr. Skippy is very sweet as you can see. And just now, three kids were
jumping on our trampoline…he jumped (not on it or into it) but literally
mimicked their jumping as he jumped around the exterior of it. Wish I could

EMMA

we took her to Petsmart yesterday and got some rope toys, etc.
we got Blue Wilderness grain-free food. they also sell it at our local feed store. when we ate dinner she was very polite. she slept in the crate very well all night. she loves the family. our tax guy came over last night and she lay down next to us and was very polite. He has always owned hunting labs. He picked her up and put her in his lap and rubbed her tummy and she was not scared or squirmy. we took her for a walk in our neighborhood. she does need training and does not know commands, and she pulls on the leash. we have signed up for training starting the middle of March. when she jumped on the couch she got off when we told her to and has not been on it again. she enjoys following my father in law around in the yard.
gotta go for now. the kids and I are going to take her for a walk .

SHASTA

We just wanted to give you an update on Shasta. We adopted her in December and she is the best dog we could ask for. She is so well mannered and obedient. She responds to everything we say and is a quick learner. Her personality is one of a kind and it fits perfectly with ours. She has a way of cheering everyone up with her kisses and her cuddles. She loves it when we go for car rides or go to the park. She is still very active and loves to play frisbee or fetch her stuffed duck toy. In the evening she loves to cuddle with us or lay at our feet. We all love Shasta and could not have asked for a better first dog than her! Thanks so much for all of your help in connecting her with us.

RANGER

Hi Sue,

It is that time of year again. Ranger turned 9. He's getting a bit more gray around his muzzle, but he looks very distinguished (as you will see in the attached pictures). His last vet check was good. He gets his teeth cleaned once a year and gets a comprehensive exam 2x a year. He still loves his walks although this year we didn't get to do as much activity because we added a new family member in December-- a little girl.     Ranger is our constant companion during night feedings and diaper changes.     He always positions himself between me and the door. He's a wonderful companion and we are so lucky to have adopted him from CCLRR.

In 2010, we had family pictures taken. Ranger was part of that (of course!), and there is also a picture of Ranger with his doggie friend, Jesse.

I hope all is well with CCLRR and with your family.

Kim -- thank you for asking after our little lady (we have shortened her name to her intials C.C.) . . . she is doing wonderful and settling in faster than I dared to hope.

Her "big" brother, Maxx, the yellow lab (5 years) in the enclosed pictures is playing with her well and her big sister, Missy, the mixed breed black/brown (12 year old lab/shepherd/queensland) in one of the pictures is accepting her a little more slowly, but doing very well.

After sticking pretty close to my side the first few days, she hangs out more now with her canine pals, while I do miss her company, I am glad that she is being accepted and loved by our other dogs.
We are working now on getting her to not bark and chase after every noise and squirrel she sees.

It was love at first sight for her and my husband (and me too) and she is slowly but surely winning over our whole "pack".

Enjoy the pictures and please feel free to keep in touch with her progress if you like.

How grateful we are at Rescue for the wonderful adopters who take Labs with problems, treat them. Love them and care for them. This is what Dodger/Kyburz new mom wrote.

Hi Charlene and Mitch,
Dodger is a sweet guy with a lot of allergies still. He takes 2 allergy pills three times daily and he's on allergy shots but so far they haven't"kicked" in. He is a smiley guy and with a lot of his teeth missing. Folks
wonder "what's wrong. NOT a thing, he just loves to smile and he sits up. My 94 year old dad LOVES him so I try and take Dodger to see dad once a week in Sac. and "the Dodge" plays in his backyard and rolls on the grass. His allergies are all at my level apparently - pine, cedar and the list goes on!!
Glad to hear from you both. My Pheona and Noel are doing great also, aging
very well.

Hi Erika;
Hope you had a great holiday season. Spencer is almost a year old (17 days) and he is doing great. He weighs 70 lbs and is VERY tall. I will try and put a couple of pictures with this. The ones with the orange toy are when he was about 16 weeks and the two with him sitting up are about a month ago. We want to thank you again for providing us with such a special dog. He is sooo smart and is the most loving and friendly boy.

Well I hope the pictures come through

A big thanks to CCLRR for making our family complete!

In the spring of 2010, my husband and I adopted 2 wonderful labs (Jane age 2 in March, Sarah age 1 in April) from this lab rescue group and have since found a great friend in Diane who helped us.

I have so many wonderful things to say about these dogs.  They have healed us from the pain of losing our last dog due to heart decease on New Year’s day of 2010.  We live in “Lab Heaven” in the country with a pond.  When each dog first arrived, they were somewhat tentative about swimming.  Well, not anymore!  They are very active girls who insist on playing a lot of fetch and having a dip in the pond to cool off afterward.

Jane has taken to “fishing” as we have our pond stocked with large mouth
bass.  She actually puts her head under the water to look for them.  If one jumps out of the water she will spend an hour swimming in circles to find them.  Sometimes she just dips into the pond and swims laps all by herself.  She loves the water!

When we first received little Sarah she was in very poor shape – very thin and her coat was dull and falling out.  We have put 10 pounds on her small frame and she has a shiny new coat!  She is great at fetching and will drop the ball right at your feet for the next throw.  They both love to fetch in the water too.  It is amazing how far they fly out over the water to retrieve their toy.  My husband is currently working on getting them both involved in the dock jumping competitions.

Both of these dogs adapted very well to our schedules and are a very big part of our lives.  They fill our hearts and make us laugh.

Thank you!

Mary & Randy

Bodhi

A CCLRR Success Story

In March, 2008, around St. Patrick's day, a big young male yellow lab was picked up running stray in Placerville and taken to the county shelter. No one claimed him, and he was declared adoptable--except for one problem. He was a "wild man" in his kennel, jumping and barking constantly. He injured his ear and his tail, and developed a lick granuloma. No one was going to adopt this problem child. A staff member contacted the local CCLRR rep, Sue Kaiser, who took one look and saw a perfectly normal young lab who was in desperate need of exercise, social contact, and a home environment.. She placed him with a foster, and happened to mention him to a mutual acquaintance of hers and mine at a training class.
Meanwhile John and I were on the lookout for a young lab. We had lost the last of my elderly GSD's in February, and had decided to look for a Lab. John's only previous dog had been a well loved Lab, and I thought it would be good for me not to try to replace my beautiful girls, but to go in a totally different direction. I let it be known that we were looking, and sent in an application to CCLRR. While we were out of town, I got an e-mail from Sue's friend about this yellow boy, who happened to be staying with yet another mutual friend..
As soon as we got home, I went to meet him. He walked right up the driveway toward me, sat in front of me, and looked softly into my eyes. I was a goner!
We took him home two days later.
That was April 1, 2008. At the shelter, they'd called him Milo, his rescue name was Reilly, but we named him Bodhi, short for Bodhisattva, a sort of Buddhist saint. We liked the sound and and the meaning. We've had quite a time together! Bodhi had fantastic house manners, and indoors was calm and loving. He was also extremely intelligent and loved to work and learn. But outdoors he was highly aroused and impulsive. He was also dog reactive.. Just taking him for a walk in the neighborhood was a huge challenge. Thankfully, we connected with an excellent local trainer, and my own previous training and handling experience kicked in, having lain dormant during my years with senior dogs.
Fast forward to January, 2011. Bodhi and I are training for Rally and Obedience competition, and are having fun exploring the new sport of Noseworks. He has been going to daycare twice a week for over 2 years, and can play appropriately with all ages and sizes of dogs. He can even play with a couple of dogs who can't play with anyone else! Wherever we go, he puts a smile on people's faces. His zest for life and good will toward all are infectious, and his goofy antics make him the "class clown". He is the embodiment of joy, and our dearest companion.
Thanks for rescuing this wonderful being!

ROXY

This is what makes Rescue so wonderful. Clara now Roxy was the little yellow lab that someone found in a camp ground intoxicated. Turned out dog also has severe hip dysplasia, but this amazing couple loved her and adopted her anyway. This is what they wrote to her foster mom.

Dear Tracy and Family,
Roxy is doing so well! After recovering from her surgery and ear infection she has been happy and thriving in her new home. Bill put in a doggy door so while we're away at work she has free reign of the backyard. When we get home from work she does her new signature "bunny hop" dance around the house as she bursts with excitement. The bunny hop has also been spotted when she's especially excited about food coming her way and when she meets new poeple. Our 3 1/2 year old nephew was just here for a week and he followed Roxy around, imitating her every move showering her with love and at times being slightly bothersome to her. Through it all, she was calm, sweet, gentle and patient. It was the ulitmate test! We're working with a trainer to help her with fear of other dogs. Our family gave us a gift certificate at the Rec center which offers warm water swimming for dogs, which she will love. Roxy has been an amazing first addition to our family and we thank-you for fostering her. Best Regards, Molly, Bill, and Roxy.

ISAAC

Here is an update and some pictures. Isaac (Moby) has gotten all his hair back and is the most shiny black lab now! He has passed one round of obedience school and is really well behaved most of the time. He still tries to climb on your lap on the couch and makes sure the kids are totally clean whenever they are within reach of his kisses. Ike gets along with every dog he has met, especially his "little" sister and will fetch at the dog park until his tongue is dragging! We have been on a few road trips to visit family and hopefully we can see if he likes the snow this winter. Once he adjusted ot our house and his skin started feeling better, his personality really started to come out and we could not have asked for a more friendly, outgoing and loveable Lab. Thanks so much for trusting us with this special boy.

BENTLY

We adopted 11-year old Bently about two months ago. This senior complements and completes our family: well mannered, housebroken, good natured, mellow and funny. We adore Bently's endless affection, expressive amber eyes, stately silver muzzle and antics. Bently has acclimated quickly to his new home, including the company of two yellow lab sisters Nell and Molly. He enjoys hunting through numerous bushes in the backyard; pretends he's a soil cultivator; helps make and eat homemade doggie pumpkin bars; has entertaining spurts of playfulness; and does the cutest circular jig when asked to go for a walk. Senior labs are wonderful to adopt because they provide great companionship and caring for them is so easy. Thank you CCLRR and Foster Mom Nancy for rescuing Bently, restoring his health and allowing us to adopt him. We absolutely love our chocolate boy! Sincerely, Lucinda & Jim

"Sweety" ... now SABLE

Miss Sable with two of her three new siblings.

“Sweety” was pulled from the Sacramento City Shelter as a foster for Lab rescue. A owner surrender, Sweety fit her name and was a shelter favorite. Well, best laid plans, CCLRR volunteer, Liz,  decided to keep her forever.  Now named Sable, she lives with Sherman and Lux (also CCLRR rescues) and little Briar. Sable is being evaluated as a SPCA pet therapy dog and enjoys going to river every day, and the dog park on weekends.

"Yoda" .... Now FIONA

hi

I adopted Yoda 2 at a rescue event in Folsom back in the early part of November. I have been meaning to write to you and give you and update, but with the holidays and a new dog things have been a little crazy.

Yoda's name has been changed to Fiona. She has had no problem with the name change, but it sounds so much like Yoda, we didn't think there would be. She is sleeping and eating in her crate with no problem. I did let her sleep on the bed one night, but that didn't work out because if you get up in the middle of the night she gets so excited it takes about 15 minutes to settle down, so the crate seems best.

She plays with the standard poodle, and my sister's greyhounds if they are here. We also have a bunch of nylabone chew toys lying around and she thinks chewing on them is great fun. She walks around all day with a huge grin on her face and at night gets on the bed and watches tv.

I can't tell you how happy I am to have her. She is everything I was hoping for when I went to the lab rescue event last month.

thanks
Genevie Krieger

COSMO

November 3, 2010 – City Pound AKA Prison
There I was, all alone in this cold, noisy and very smelly place. I heard the cries of dogs, meows of cats and occasionally huge humans came by yelling at everyone to be quiet. I was scared to death and never uttered a single sound the whole time I was there. One day a girlhuman came rushing by, boy did she smell good. My nose kind of followed her as she walked briskly by. Hum, “Wonder who on earth that was?” I asked myself. I could hear her cooing over all the others down the way from me. I wondered WHY she was not yelling at everyone. I heard cage doors open and close and the clicking of that big chocolate Lab’s nails as they touched the concrete. “Where they are going?” I wondered as the sweet smell of the girlhuman’s perfume faded away.
I started feeling kind of sad but perked up a bit when I heard footsteps approaching. It was the girl-human again and she stopped right in front of me!!! YIKES!!! “Hello there little fellow”, she said. “Aren’t you just about the cutest little one I have ever seen?” I wiggled with joy; I think I even peed on myself. “WAIT! Where are you going? ….Come back, please don’t leave me here!” Minutes later she returned with the guard who held the jail key. What’s this? The girl-human is taking me out. “Where are we going?” She picked me up, kissed my face, and squeezed me real hard. Geesh, I thought my guts were going to explode! Despite my squished guts, I returned her kiss with a big slurpy dog kiss. Next thing I knew we were in the Warden’s office and the girl-human was signing my release papers. Up to now, that was the happiest day of my life…by the way, my name is Cosmo and I am a Viszla/Labrador.
The girl-human and I drove off the grounds and I never looked back. The first stop was to the Vet’s house where there were more nice girl-humans that smelled good. They put me put on the counter and fussed over me like I was a baby…well, I guess I am. They pinched me, looked into my ears, up my nose and stuck things in me where nothing has ever been before. Finally we blew out of that place and ended up at the girl-human’s house which I discovered was MY HOUSE!!! I met my big brother, Hunter, and sister, Dolly. I’m sure what to call the girl-human that smells good but to me she was like Santa. I doubt that Santa smells that good…but I decided to call her Santa anyway.
Santa stuck me in a big pool of water and nearly drown me with bubbles…yuck, I didn’t like it! She quickly dried me off, fed me some really good stuff with stewed chicken on top, and tucked me into a cozy bed with blankets for the night. I don’t remember anything after that. I was clean, full and comfy in a cozy bed. The best part was there were no sounds of crying or barking and it wasn’t cold or stinky. “Am I in heaven?” I wondered. The next three weeks were kind of a blur as I got really sick and couldn’t eat or keep anything down. I felt lousy. Santa was cooking for me hoping to fatten me up and I went back to see those girl-humans at the vet house so many times, I new all of them by name. Everyone fussed over me like something bad was going to happen. “Should I be worried?” Santa got calls at night and I heard her say, “I’m sorry Cosmo would not be a good match for you.” “What? Is she selling me for Christmas?” I want to be with my Santa forever.        When I started feeling better Santa told me a bedtime story about a very sad Doctor that wanted a puppy of his very own. He hadn’t had one as he was never home and was always so busy at the Hospital. His mother has a pretty blonde they call Mabel. This man, Santa went on, has finally found the right time in his life to adopt one very lucky puppy. Santa told me Dr. Ben lives in the hills down South and has a really big yard that has mountain lions and snakes living there too but that’s okay because they live up on top of the hill and are forbidden to come down. Dr. Ben likes to surf when he is not in surgery so some lucky pup is going to be running on the beach and eating and/or rolling on every dead thing that washes ashore. “OH BOY, what puppy could be so lucky?” I asked Santa. Santa closed the book and with tears in her eyes she said, “You are Cosmo. He wants you my little one”. “I don’t know what to say, I love Santa so much!”    On November 22, 2010, I will go to meet the Real Santa, my new daddy, I will call him Dr. Santa!
Santa went back to that smelly Prison and took a pretty yellow female out of there. She is really beautiful and she is as happy as I was when I first came home. She will be giving birth the day after Thanksgiving.
For all you guys out there, hang in there, there really is a Santa!
Cosmo Taylor

HOGAN

Hello!,

I believe our contact persons were Kate and Lindsay....

I am just checking in we are coming up on almost a year that we adopted our large black male Lab "Lucky" from your organization. We have renamed him"Hogan" and he has become an intrigal part of our family. We were lucky to say the least to have found such a wonderful dog. He is the perfect family dog and we want you all to know we have moved to Bend Oregon from our former residence at Roseville, CA. Bend is an outdoor wonderland being very similar to Truckee up in Tahoe. We have a home on the Deachutes River and he goes fishing with me on a weekly basis. He also goes to work with me everyday to Pronghorn Golf Club which is a golf course where he runs the property and is a favorite among our members and guests.

Hogan (aka Lucky) is our 5-year old daughters best friend. They do everything together from play fetch to dress up in Princess clothes! (wish he could tell us how he feels about that). He is great in the car and we take him on all of our road trips. He is going to Seattle with us on Thanksgiving for a few days to visit family and is well loved and welcomed by the Grandparents. He has a dog door in the laundry room into the garage and out to the backyard and has full run of the house and yard. Plenty of dog friends in the neighborhood. He sleeps on the foot of our bed or our daughters bed every night. Still working on him with his manners meeting other dogs on leash. He is not good with other Alpha male dogs, but good with all other dogs. He gets along well with his cousin who is a young male yellow lab. They swim and play together until they drop! He has never had any accidents in the house and is very obedient. We are even considering another adoption dog, probably a female who would be gentle and house trained like Hogan.

All in all we are very pleased to have Hogan in our family and want to say thank you for allowing us to adopt him.

Joey and Stacy Pickavance

Grace/Kiva

Hi,
Gracie is doing great, we renamed her Kiva after our favorite beach in Tahoe. She's getting more comfortable everyday and will now go out into the backyard on her own without needing us to follow her. We don't leave the house with her back there but she'll at least explore on her own now. She's been getting plenty of exercise during the day too. Overall she's doing really good and is a really sweet girl. We're happy we dopted her :)

Zoey, Our New Girl

We were fortunate to get a call from the Central California Labrador Retriever Rescue organization the Monday night before Thanksgiving about Zoey, and we adopted her the Saturday after Thanksgiving. She has already added sooo much love and laughter to our household. These pictures don't do her justice. She's an 18 month old brown labrador retriever. She is extremely smart, well natured and loving. We feel sure this will be her forever home, and we will be forever grateful to those at CCLRR.

You rescued me....Thanks!

Hi,

Remember me? I'm Ellie Mae. You named me that after you found me at the Stockton Shelter in a very sad condition. I was a stray picked up and taken there. I recently had puppies when you came to get me at the end of April this year. I had kennel cough, infected ears, infected eye, bad skin with patches of hair missing and I was pretty skinny too. I'm so happy you came to get me. I spent 10 days in quarantine and eventually went to my wonderful foster home for about 3 weeks.

My forever family saw my picture and read about me on your website at the end of June. I'm so thankful! They were sad with the recent loss of their female dog and their male dog was very depressed without her. When my Mom saw me for the first time at my foster home, she thought I was the most beautiful dog...she said she saw something special when she looked into my eyes.

My new mom and Dad brought me to their nice home and immediately made me a part of the family. They took me to their vet to get my bothersome ears checked out and to find out why I was accidentally peeing on the floor. After tests were taken, the vet said that I probably have something called "incontinence" because my hormones were off. That problem has easily been solved with a pill that I take once a day. My ears were another story...I had the worst ear infection of any dog the vet had ever seen. I'm happy to say that my ears are great now. My Mom has to use ear wash only a couple of times a week now. Guess what? Several weeks later my vet (she's really nice) found a broken molar tooth in my upper jaw. That bad tooth was finally removed and I now have clean teeth too.

So...my life is really great right now...two full meals every day with my special food, morning walk and evening walk, a brother to hang out with (I cheered him up), a squeaky tennis ball to play with, and a great Mom and Dad that give me lots of love. They even let me sleep on the bed with them at night. None of this would have been possible if you hadn't come to pick me up that day at the shelter. Thank you so very, very much!

Love, Ellie Mae
PS...Hope you like my pictures.

Sent to Bently's Foster.....we love adopters who take our senior Labs

Hi, Nancy: Just wanted to let you know that our vet checked Bently's four lumps today, and all are benign. Our vet said that Bently is in good condition for an 11-year old lab. Our chocolate boy is acclimating to his new home and sisters, and he's doing well. We love him! And Bently seems happy here, too. We hope you are enjoying life. Take care, Lucinda & Jim

BRADY

I attached a couple of recent pictures. He's been helping Doug remodel a vacation home on Puget Sound.
He's just the sweetest Dog ever!
We love him so much, I can't imagine not having him and we didn't have a dog before, just helped out with our kids dogs whenever they needed to go somewhere.

We tell everyone that comments on him, about cc Lab rescue. He's a great ad!

My son is in the dog training business in San Diego, and met him for the first time last month. He couldn't believe what a beautiful dog he is and how smart. He worked with him just a little bit and he now heals even without the leash!

You can put anyone in touch with us if they want a recommendation about cc lab rescue -- we're true believers! If we didn't spend half our time in WA, we'd get more involved here, but we're back and forth so much -- right now it wouldn't work. Maybe after Doug gets the place in WA put back together, we'll be back in CA more.

Brady just loves it up there -- you should see him play in the sound and he has two buddies, Turbo and Shadow that have taught him the ropes up there -- he still doesn't swim much, but he loves to prance in the water and ride in the row boat! :) We'll work on the swim part next summer!

Thanks again for all your help!      Betty

Butter now Niki with her new friends

Moose is accepting her very well; yes, he is protective, that is why we knew we wouldn't be able to get a male. She has adjusted very well, only 2 accidents in the house the 1 day we got home; otherwise she is doing well, learning her name; if the weather is nice on Sunday, we may take them to the lake and see how she likes the water; she loves to splash her front paws in the water bowl (all over the kitchen floor!!! ugggg) so we'll see only if it's warm enough. Bill seems to think she'll hit the water before Lucy or Moose. By the way Moose loves to swim now.

We are very happy with "Niki" and happy Debbie let us take her home, she is a doll.

Linda

Those kind, friendly eyes that express character, intelligence, and good temperment. That was my "Buck". A ten year old yellow lab. I lost Buck on September 16, 2010 and my heart was truly broken.
Buck had been 10 months old when I turned to Central California Lab Rescue and found that immediately he was "the one". He went home with us and the rest in all history and happy memories.
After losing Buck and weeks of being lonely I thought I would never find another lab with all those great qualities but decided to look. I returned to Lab Rescue once again. People have told me you don't pick the dog, the dog picks you... Maybe they were right! Could I find a companion as sweet and dedicated as my "Buck"? I was skeptical.
Days later and many thanks to Lab Rescue I HAVE found my new best friend!! A beautiful chocolate lab that I have named "Lulu". The minute I walked towards her she laid down so I could rub her tummy and she spoke as if to say "take me home!" Yes! I am now a believer that the dog does pick you. We had an instant bond and she settled in right away. She knew this was her home!
I am SO grateful to Lab Rescue for once again giving me a loving, sweet companion. Lab Rescue does a much needed service to all Labradors that need homes and I truly appreciate all of their hard work and dedication!

                                                        -Terry and Lulu

SHERMAN

Sherman and his brother Panzer (adopted separately) were owner surrenders out of Tuolomme County.
What began as a foster situation for Sherman in Sacramento ended as a permanent forever home with Liz and her other two dogs.   Sherman is a sweet as they come, but needs a lot of affirmation. So we thought he would make a great pet therapy dog. He passed his test and through the Sacramento's SPCA's Love On Loan program Sherman and his owner, Liz, visit nursing homes.   Sherman is a favorite and I can't think of another dog so well suited for the job. In these photos Sherman visits his favorite residents.

Jack "The Snack" is headed North! And, unlike in one of his past lives when he was dropped off and his people went home, we're going with him! We close on our new home in Yakima, Washington, September 30th. Jack and his pals Lobo and Molly will have a pretty good-sized back yard to run in and it's all grass - no more concrete & bark. Could be he'll get his first experience with snow, which should be interesting.

Jack's health is excellent, both back legs are strong, and he's very quick when it comes to chasing birds and squirrels (not fast enough to catch them, though). Still very food motivated, very insecure (happiest when he can see Patty and I at the same time) and still carries his Jack bed around the house when he gets excited. And, he still sings. We discovered this at Christmas, but he now sings along when the ice cream truck comes by. Very funny.

Thanks for adding him to our lives. We're pretty sure he'll enjoy the four seasons of Eastern Washington, as well as a bigger house to haul that Jack bed around in.

Bob & Patty Hood

Thank you for our baby!
I don't know who to send this to, but we adopted Loni Loo (She was named Lark then.) from Lab Rescue 3 years ago on Labor Day weekend. We have never thanked you for her, however we thank God everyday for her. She was a little hyper and wouldn't look us in the eyes when we first got her, but in no time at all she was one of the family. Not a day goes by when she doesn't amaze us and bring a big, warm smile to our hearts and faces. Just thinking about her now brings wonderful joy. She has been the best gift to our family and none of us can imagine life without her and really, what it was like before she came into our home! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for saving her precious life!!!

Attached you will find just a couple of pics from the thousands we have of her!!

Always,

Dawn, Bill, & Nate Lauer

We have had Miss Holly for almost 3 months now and she really has just moved right in and made us hers.
We took her on her first family outing to Shasta Lake and she loved the boat rides, kept biting at the water. When she got hot she just moved her little self right into the first mate chair and wouldn’t budge. Her favorite part of camping was swimming at the boat launch. She is a big water girl! She wasn’t quite sure out the actual ‘camping’ part. We had a trailer but where was the lounge chair…am I supposed to sleep in a bed on the floor??? So she decided the next best place to sleep was taking ½ of the drop down couch and sleeping with mom. Wouldn’t have been so bad if her feet didn’t stink! She loved her morning walks where she met other dogs and people…she is very social ya know!

She has really filled a spot in our hearts. Now that our baby is off to college…we have Holly to spoil!

From our foster and great adopter Miley

I adopted Isabelle (now Izzy) from the Lab Rescue a little over 5 years ago. She is doing so great! I take her to agility class once a week, witch she loves. Izzy LOVES retrieving but is not so good about bringing the ball back and she loves going to the dog park. But most of all she loves playing with her new brother. We adopted Corky on August 15th after fostering him for 10 months. He is doing so great in his new home! He loves going to the dog park and being in the house. I want to thank the lab rescue for rescuing my furry kids. I could not thank you enough!

Hello,

We just wanted to let you know that Diego, and now we call him Digger, is doing great. We are thrilled to have him as part of our family, and is getting along great with his furry four legged sister Barklee. He is enjoying swimming in the river, fetching balls, going for walks, riding in the family truck and lounging on the deck. He is such a sweet happy boy and if we could name him again we would name him Mr. Wiggles because when he wags his tail, which is contantly, his entire body wiggles with it.

We have enclosed some photos so you can see for yourself.

Thank you for your help in finding him,
Dana Barrow

Remember Amos & Andy...well here is Amos 1 year later!
Hi, we thought you would like to hear how Amos is getting along. Amos is a big part of our life. He gets walked twice daily and spends the rest of the time lounging about or playing with the kids. He likes to purch on the back of the sofa and watch the world go by.

Quigley

I was born into rescue on May 3rd, 2010 along with my 4 siblings. Oh, my name is Quigley you may have seen me on the rescue site. Mom and dad were victims of foreclosure when they both ended up in Rescue. A nice lady kept mom who was pregnant at the time until we were born and old enough to go to foster homes. I have been raised with several other dogs in a very loving home. Several people called to adopt me but my foster mom just didn't think it was the right time. Boy am I ever glad she held out as I am now the luckiest puppy in the whole world. My new family called and we were very interested in meeting them. The first time we met them, Burnne, Kevin and daughter Hali it was LOVE at first sight. Burnne had tears in her eyes as we got out of the car, Kevin and Hali were just beaming! Could this be my new family? We took a long walk, went down by the stream, I got so much attention. When I turned and looked at my foster mom, I knew this would be my new family! HOT DOG!! I would be going to my forever home the next week. SO here I am, with my clothes on, bags packed ready for my new journey. Here is a picture of my new family. AND a picture of me chewing on a stick in my new digs! Did I mention it's in Santa Cruz! YES, this was defiantly worth the wait.

HOLLY
My family was going through the grieving process. We had lost our 2 labs, Spikey 13 years and Daisy 7 years, within the last 13 months.

We decided we just were not the type of family to be without a dog. There was just an emptiness around our house. I found CCLRR online and we decided to adopt an older dog. Puppies are cute and always get adopted…we wanted to help an older dog have a good life and be part of our family. We spotted Holly. A Fox Red lab with a saggy belly, warts on her eyes and the sweetest face. My husband thought she was beautiful! We were bummed when we called and found out she had been adopted. So we were just waiting for ‘our lab’ and went on planning my daughters graduation party. Then I received a phone call on May 28th, saying Holly needed to be re-assigned so to speak. Her new home was tri-level and she is a follower and that made her out of breath…a lot! So her current mom brought her up to Sacramento and she came home to the midst of a Graduation and graduation party with about 50 people the following day. She did great. Walked around and just waited for a pat or pet or a little treat here and there and barked if she got left in the house away from the people.

She soon taught us that:
1) We were wrong when we told her not to get on our bed. Really it IS perfectly ok.
2) The lounge chair was NOT off limits as we tried to tell her. That too was perfectly ok!
3) Mom no longer can go to the bathroom alone.
4) Mom and Dad need to hug Holly..not each other and
5) Sissy’s bedroom door should never be closed. Holly will open it.

So, after we were trained…Holly has settled in and really is kind of spoiled. she loves roasted chicken in her dog food and will dance for it! She has selective hearing, follows our every step and loves her new pool. We can’t keep her out of it. She loves the drying off process before she can come back inside. If she gets in trouble..I swear she smiles! She now goes to work with Dad most days painting houses and has claimed the front seat of the truck as hers. She loves to have her belly rubbed and when she is belly side up..she looks like a bat! She treats us like ‘puppies’ and wants to clean us. She has a cute little personality and we are very happy to have her as part of our family.

Thank you CCLRR for all you do. We will be looking for a little brother for Holly in the near future.

Sincerely,

Brian,Jackie and Melanie Kuhn

BUDDY

He was a champ in the car! He is such a joy to have. I love him. He and Kayla have meshed just fine! Thank you so much. I can hardly wait until I can take him out for a walk.

Buddy is such a smart dog! On the second day he already knew the names of his toys. All I have to say is "get George" (his absolute favorite, it is a monkey) or "get Sherman" (a water bottle bear) and he gets them immediately. He does his sitting and down without the prompting of a receiving a treat. The kids in my childcare love him and vice versa. He and Kayla get along so well...they are both my little shadows. I love how Buddy nibbles on my chin when I ask him for kisses. As you know, he is a big love! Thank you so much for leading me to him. I am really such a proud new mama so to speak. He is simply wonderful!!! He never stops though...he sits by me if I am working but he never goes to sleep...he is so funny...he has his game on 24/7. He sleeps through the night like a baby because I am sure he is tired from not resting all day

Success--5 years late

This is Lux (formerly Lucky from Olivehurst). He is now at least 17 years young...We adopted him from CCLRR more than 5 years ago and he is the sweetest man.
We needed a very mellow dog after I had to put my lab mix down for aggression.
Every summer I say "We're not going to have Lux next summer," and he keeps on ticking.
He is having trouble walking but he still goes to the river nearly everyday to paddle around and he stands at the dog park checking out the youngsters.
In this photo he is enjoying a rest by the pool.

Hi there... I just thought you'd want a quick note about your sweet boy Skipper.

He is the sweetest thing and he seems very happy here. He took a bit to warm up, I think he was worried he'd be bumped again. But now he tailgates our 7 yr old CCLRR rescue Allie most of the day. He was shy about the water at first, would go sit on the first step of our pool, curious but not willing to risk going in. My kids finally coaxed him in and got him swimming. Now he chases tennis balls all afternoon, including in the pool.

He loves our 16 yr old labbie too (adopted from the County shelter at age 1), they all sleep on 2 big beds, in a dog pile of large proportions. But he is especially close to Allie and they play and sleep together all the time. I'm sending a photo of the two of them sleeping.

He also seems to be a really fast learner. You tell him something once and he is very cooperative. He used to jump on the door when we came home and I told no sternly once and he hasn't done it since.

He does still howl at the firetrucks but it's become sort of endearing.

Thanks again for finding me. We are so lucky to have him.

Mary

This is not only a "SUCCESS STORY" but a little window into Rescue
"Exercise Induced Collapse" in a genetic defect in Labs....they lack the ability to cool their bodies and literally collapse and can die. There is no treatment. Saber was considered "unadoptable" until our own Charlene with her huge heart came along.          Saber came to live with me the summer of 2008. He was a CCLRR dog. He has exercise induced collapse. He had 4 homes in his life. He was rescued from the Sacramento SPCA at the age of 6 months, adopted by a surgeon who had him for 3 1/2 years before he retired and moved to Southern California.         He came back into rescue. He was adopted three times in 2008. The last time he came back, Jackie had me meet the lady in Natomas after I got off of work since I worked out there. I bought him home. I thought I was just to foster him. Little did I know that Jackie and Roz had other plans for Saber. Jackie said keep him (I didn't even have to pay the adoption fee)!!! I had lost Buddy, a CCLRR lab mix at the age of 14 a few months before. Jackie and Roz knew I was heartbroken over lossing him so they thought Saber would heal my broken heart which he gladly did.

Saber is about 6 years old now and never collapsed on me. My friend Mitch invited me to bring Saber to her house in June 2010 for her dad, William, to meet him. Little did I know that Saber liked water and could swim. We took him down to the pond on Mitch's property, and to my surpise, Saber jumpbed in!!!! I was so afraid he would over do it and collaspse but he never did. William kept throwing sticks in the water and Saber would jump in and retrieve them. William took these two pictures of him.

Another Success Story....from his new family

Kekoa is doing fine. He has settled down a lot - he is a still little hyper, but is now calm most of the time. I really had to learn to set some limits on him - otherwise he was acting crazy all the time. He & Misha seem to live in peace, but don't interact all that much except on walks when they smell the same things together. I have to watch out for Misha when he gets excited because he's so big that he sometimes inadvertantly knocks her over or steps on her, which can be a little scary as he is twice her size. But overall, I think he's such a sweetie and enjoy having him around, and he seems to be pretty happy as well. He loves his walks and loves to go up to everyone he meets and get a pat. So, that's the scoop on Kekoa & his new home. Here are 2 pics I took yesterday...hope you enjoy them.

We adopted “Mays” from her Lab Foster Trina Stillian on June 21st, 2010. She is an 11 week old, beautiful yellow lab puppy. We have been waiting to adopt a puppy for a long time and are so excited to finally have her. She is a wild, funny, ball of energy and learns very quickly, so we are having a lot of fun with her training.

She is a great addition to our lives!

Warmest Regards,

Caitlin and Alex Strayer

We received this letter from Tia who is 11 years young and blind and found a
really wonderful family to love

Dear Lab Rescue,

I've been meaning to write to you much sooner, but my new life kept me very busy. Ever since I got to Paradise I have had a full program each day. It starts with me waking up my parents, then mom takes me outside to do my stuff, then a delicious breakfast is served to me in my playroom, I've learned to eat a little slower, mom puts chicken soup on top of the kibble, that slows me down, then I walk into the big room and see if I can score some extra snacks from mom, then I make mom play with me in my room (picture with kitty in mouth!) Then we walk to the park (me with pink cap), I know the way so well, I could find it blindfolded. I can run around in the grassy area and mom makes me find her by calling my name and making noise, it is pretty easy for me. Then we go home and I usually take a long nap. Mom says she has to work and I have to sleep. That is fine with me. Close to dinner time we play again outside, mom throws a ball and I find it in no time, it is so much fun! Then dinner, a little TV, me on the couch and the day is over and we all go to sleep in the same room. I'm always with my family and I am very confident and happy. I also had a check up at the vet and they told me I was in very good shape for my age, I have gained a few pounds and mom says I'm not so bony anymore, I think it makes me look younger too. My teeth sparkle and even my nose is not so rough anymore, so I am living the good life. I just wanted to let you know that all is well in Paradise and I wanted to thank you for taking care of me.
I end with big wet kisses to you all

Tia

In January CCLRR got a message from an upriver shelter; they had a wonderfully sweet large yellow male lab stray but he was heartworm positive so they would put him down unless rescue took him imediately. Treating a HW dog is expensive, painful, and time-consuming; the dog has to be kept quiet for over a month while the dead worms in the bloodstream disintegrate. I have an enclosure in my garage that could serve as his rehab center, and a sad, sick, scrawny, and starved-for-attention 93 lb lab came to me. I have three dogs (Franklin a chocolate lab from CCLRR in 2002, Ready the ridgeless ridgeback from Yolo shelter, and Midnight a black shepherd of some sort from Sac County shelter). They do not get on easily with other dogs but are used to a foster in the garage not being their business. I bought a great Dane sized crate and started bringning Tahoe out in it in my family room.   Throughout his confinement he was wonderfully mellow and patient and friendly and my dogs got used to him. I started keeping him on leash and letting my dogs be with him, one at a time, two at a time, three at a time.
The females loved him immediately and when he was neutered, Franklin, my only other male, accepted him completely. So Tahoe never made the adoption list and has his forever home here. He is now heartworm negative, happy, and in good health. He brings my aging dogs new play, entertainment and energy; he brings sunshine into all our lives. This story has a moral - be sure to keep all your dogs on the monthly heartworm preventative pill. all the time.

This story is about “Panchito”, he was found as a Stray up North. When nobody came to claim him, he was indeed in trouble. Poncho was rescued 4/30/2010. I promised him that he would get the home of his dreams if he would just be patient. When I got the call from the Pease Family the first thing out of my mouth was What took you so long to call? My boy has been waiting so long for you! Poncho has started his new life with his forever family, bags unpacked and ready for New adventures.
Here’s what his new family had to say about their new addition

Hi Diane

I'm not always able to get to my emails and yesterday was one of them. Ironically I was taking photos of the kids and "Ponchie" all day yesterday, so here are a few.

We've decided on a new name...."Enzo". I've been reading this wonderful book called The Art of Racing In the Rain. It's a complete tear-jerker about a dog that agrees to be the guardian of a family, primarily the little girl. I highly recommend it.

"Enzo" is doing wonderfully. He survived his first day alone. I came home at lunch to check on him and Steve got home around 4. He seemed to be fine, but was really excited when everyone was home together. This seems to be the way he likes it. If we're in different rooms, he makes his rounds to "check on everyone". When he gets tired of doing this, he'll lie down but keeps his eyes towards the rooms we're in.

He's doing great with the leash-training. I can push the stroller as well as hold onto his leash. He's just about mastered the dog door thanks to Aidan showing him how to go in and out of it (he probably has used it more than Enzo!). You were right him about liking men - he has really taken to Steve. When Steve gets up (really early) he and Enzo get to spend some one on one time that usually includes a run/walk. Enzo usually beats the kids to the door when Steve arrives home from work.

He's still in the kennel at night. We've had a few stuffed animal/kid toy casualties, but we expected this. We'll be working on this as well as some occasional counter-surfing. Nothing serious... we expected much bigger challenges.

We absolutely love and adore him. It's as though he was meant to be with our family and we thank you for helping guide him to us. Thank you for everything you do and we plan on keeping you updated.

Sincerely,

Renee Pease

We love getting these e-mails...seeing our "orphans" in their happy new homes. Miss Chile you are our SUCCESS STORY

We are the Gore's and we adopted Chile about 2 1/2 weeks ago. We adore her and she seems very happy with her new family which includes a couple kiddos and a little doggy brother. I have attached some pictures and would really appreciate it if you could forward them to Mikki- who fostered Chile and who was so helpful as we were deciding to adopt Ms. Chile.
I will be sending more info about our fun girl and maybe someday we'll be featured on a "success story." thank you so much for what you all do. These are such wonderful dogs- they deserve to find great homes!
Thanks-
Meg Gore

This is the dog that no one wanted because of her eye. She finally found her perfect home:

Hi Nancy!

I just wanted to email you some more pictures of Gidget. She is the PERFECT DOG!!! We are so in love with her :) She has brought us so much joy already, and its only been three weeks. She seems to be totally adjusted to her new surroundings and schedule. She loves her toys, playing fetch, and going for walks.

We took your advice and are talking her to a VIP clinic this weekend to get her heartworm prescription. She is doing well on the Kirkland lamb and rice food. We just feel so blessed to have found such a gem. Oh, and our families love her too! Thanks again for helping us get off to a good start with her.

Talk soon! :)

Harley & Beanie
March 10, 2010

We love it when our Seniors find homes but when TWO SENIORS find a great home together...THAT'S A SUCCESS STORY Thank you John and Marilyn for giving them such a wonderful home
Harley and Beanie came home on Feb 27th and immediately settled in. They act like they've been together their entire lives, no competition between them, not even for chew toys. They act like an old married couple. Harley follows John around the back yard and waits for him to get dressed in the morning. He likes to lay in the grass, on our feet or next to the desk. He's standing better and smiles now. He's taken to wagging his tail. Always the gentleman, he waits until we and Beanie have gone through the door before following.

Beanie (the labbie formerly known as Bosco Bean) is a sweetie. She loves pets, as does Harley. She especially likes laying in the sun on the deck. She follows me around the house and checks on me if I sleep in. Both have met the family and some of the neighbors, these pups have beautiful manners. They like to be together and have taken to sleeping in the sewing room when I'm working in there.

They are wonderful additions to our lives.

Dillon
April 14, 2010

Dillon came to us from the Fresno SPCA and he was a mess...half his hair was gone, he had two surgeries for hematomas. We fostered him for three months to get him is good shape. He will always have skin allergies but he is 100% better...here is what his new family has to say about him.

Hi Debbie-
I just wanted to send you some pics of Dillon on a recent walk in Glen Canyon near our home. I can't believe we've had him almost 1.5 yrs. He has turned out to be such an amazing companion. He is so incredibly well-behaved, gentle, loving and loves to play with other dogs. He even learned to walk on a leash and 'curb' before we cross the street. We really couldn't have asked for a better dog. He is so quirky but we love him for it. He loves to chase the ball, but not so great at returning it. He is not a 'natural' water dog, but does enjoy getting into the river. He's been at the Russian River a few times, the Pacific, the bay and a handful of creeks and reservoirs.

He knows big Dave is his 'daddy', and is very interested in all of his movements. He knows I'm daddy #2, but less interested in my comings and goings. (I'm good with that). He patiently waits for his food, doesn't beg, knows how to 'park it', when we want him to lie in his bed to let us work in kitchen, etc. He loves running down the back steps to protect us from raccoons, opossums and squirrels, but otherwise, he's very much an indoor dog. He prefers to walk on the sidewalk and not on the grass. He's always up for a car-ride just in case we're going on a road trip or dog park, instead of the vet or groomer.

He continues to suffer from itching. We haven't quite figured out what is going on with him on that front. He is now on a raw diet and it seems to have taken care of some of it, but he stills scratches quite a bit. We haven't found a dog companion for him, but thinking about getting a kitten. He is very curious about cats, but can't imagine he would hurt the cat. We will work on a gentle introduction. Anyway, just thought you might enjoy seeing pics of him. Hope all's well. If you're ever in SF, you're welcome to stop by and visit.
Best,
Dave and Dave

Gus
April 2010

Some days this is a really hard job. When Gus came to us he had a mouth full of terribly abcessed teeth.
Thanks to donations and help from Lab Med we were able to do Gus' mouth surgery. He was a pretty sorry mess
This is what we wrote about him and here are his "BEFORE and AFTER" pictures
Gus never had a real home. Gus was found wandering around, alone - and even now, at age nine, he still has a look on his face that says, "Where did everyone go?" Regardless of the hardships of his past, Gus is a friendly guy with a friendly heart. He didn’t understand how someone could chain him outside for so long and not take him to the doctor when he was so sick – so he gave up. Today, he feels so much better and wants to forget all that ugliness. Gus is looking for the love that so many others have found. He wants someone to see him for the sweetheart he is. Gus gets along well with other dogs.Could you find a place in your heart for a sensitive guy who's spent his whole life looking for a friend? If you can't take him home, please make a difference by sponsoring or donating instead.

Here is what his new family has to say about him

mr.gus is the best dog ever! he is a joy and a big lovey boy. he sleeps next to my bed at night, and goes wherever he wants in the house during the day. he loves to run after his ball, and he ' s so cute the way he flops his front paws around when he s excited. he continues on the nature select; no plans to change his food, since it agrees with him so well. i love knowing he ' s waiting at home when I ' m driving from work. you know, when you say how bad off he was when he came to rescue, part of me wants to know what it was like, and another part of me is afraid to know what my poor guy endured. he is a prize, and we love him so much. Lawry

Happy Cappy
January 2010

Everyone, Remember Cappy....the 130 lb boy who could hardly walk....well here he is with his family...thin, active, healthy and loved. Here is a letter froim his new family....
Happy Cappy is wonderful-- we love him. LOVE him. He's a part of the family and it has been seamless. I've had rescues all of my dog life, but he has been so easy that I keep waiting for something to go south. The first few days he looked for you guys, understandably, so that was sad. But we kept hugging him and reminding ourselves that was testament to how much he was loved over there by all of you. But he was sad and he was confused.

I'm sad to admit that Dennis is his soulmate and Cappy is Dennis' soulmate... They walk together 2x a day and even though I'm home all day, and much loved by Cap, Dennis is his partner in life... Ahhh... But Cap has been seizure-free and he's already dropped nearly 5lbs (and we weren't trying... we are a house that never sits idle). He's already trying to run to the top of the hill that we live on-- a hill that he was barely walking up when we first got him. And he no longer sleeps on dog beds, opting for the guest bed... good thing no one is foolish enough to come and stay in this crazy house! (He has just popped up on my bed, smiling as I write this.) He seems to thrive on our every hyper child, Maggie, and they roll around and run around all day. (All day... All, all, all, all day.)

Best,
Carolyn Carr

Tess

One of our volunteers bailed Tess out of a Shelter. They were going to euthanize her, she had Heartworm. Tess went through the treatment, which is very painful plus being confined for 6 weeks without complaint.
Here is a note from her new family. This is what makes Rescue so rewarding.

I wanted to drop you a line and send some photos of our Tessy girl. She is such a love! I just don't even have the words to tell you how much we love her. She brings joy to us every single day - she makes us laugh all the time.
My son, Cason, can do no wrong with Tess. Tess cuddles up in his room during story time at night. They play tug-a-war all the time and Cason can sit, climb, hug, run with Tess for hours on end.
Henry the kitty and Tess play all the time, too. They run with each other, "scuffle" and then curl up and snooze. It's so cute! Henry kitty even cleans Tess sometimes.
When I have a few moments and decide to take a much needed nap, Tess curls right up with me and falls fast asleep with her head on my chest. It's the best feeling.
We continue to be so grateful for this wonderful spirit added to our home.

With many thanks,

Lisa

DAISY

Julie Walsh adopted Daisy from Lisa O. and asked if we could post her success story:

Daisy was previously a neglected outdoor (run) dog and she is always inside each and every day with me and her brother Jagger, yellow Lab, age 3 1/2. She gets two outings per day--mostly offleash at the local high school with other dogs and lots of Labbies! These photos are of her at the beach in Carmel (probably the first time she has ever seen a beach!) this past Saturday. She gets fed regularly, which, I understand was not the case in her previous life. She'll be swimming in our pool this summer. We feel GREAT about saving her life and saving a Lab's life!!! She is precious--so very very sweet...couldn't be happier with her. Lisa in Atwater is the BEST. Julie Wals

BAILEY
5-6-2010

Below is a note from the people who adopted my foster dog Ranger, now Bailey, almost a year and a half ago. I pulled him from my shelter where he was picked up as a stray and while in transport to the shelter, the metal divider had somehow fallen over & the pit bull next to him attacked him. Poor guy, when I first saw him he was curled up tight like a donut and I had to coax him to the door so I could check him out. He sniffed me & I talked "baby talk" to him about his poor ear and he just wagged his tail and licked my hand. He turned out to be such a sweetheart! Was a big, big boy, but the gentle giant type. He looks like he's gained some weight, and still a cutie.

"Lisa, You had mentioned that you wouldn't mind having an update on Bailey from time to time. He is doing beautifully. We still struggle with the hair in the house but it's not as bad as last year. He is such a wonderful dog with a great personality and extreme loyalty towards us. Extremely gentle - hardly ever barks and he wants to be and go with us all the time. Thanks for your role in us having him with us. Best Regards, Chris and Kathryn Mullins"

RIO

Hello to everyone at CCLRR,

I adopted Riot from Central California Lab Rescue back in September of 2009. I changed his name to Rio, just dropped the t off the end. It suits him better. Although I can see where he got the name riot he does so many funny goofy things that he is a riot and makes one ROTFL (Roll on the floor laughing). He lays on his back and bites at his feet, he entertains himself in so many ways its hard to describe in an email some of the funny things he does. He will throw the ball in the air for himself and catch it. He loves his stuffed toys but shreds them in an instant. When I got him the info from when he was picked up it said he was a wild dog. When I first saw him I knew he was for me. When I went to pick him up at Petsmart in Folsom he had a very strong pull and I thought to myself am I going to be able to handle him. He weighed almost 90 pounds. I'm so glad I got him. He is such a wonderful dog so sweet and smart. He learns so quickly it hasn't been quite a year yet. He wouldn't get into the car at Petsmart and the foster said this was one of his issues, again I thought oh no there is no way I can lift this dog into the car, We went to the dog park and he had so much fun after that he couldn't wait to get in the car. Now he sits at the back of the vehicle and waits till I say hop up. He knows sit, come, stay, leave it, drop it and we are working on walking on the lease well. He still pulls but is getting better. For a big Lab that is less than 2 years old he is so mellow and just wants to be with his people. He is great at he dog park. We went to Lexington Reservoir, he loves the water, he loves to stick his head in it, as long as he can have his feet on the ground he is not willing to get in and swim yet but with encouragement I think he will. Thanks for all you do and for saving these wonderful puppies and giving them a second chance to have a wonderful life.

Blessings, Cheri

PUPPIES
Thanks to some great volunteers, we rescued six 2 week old Lab pups from a drainage ditch. They are being bottle fed and will be ready for their new homes in about 6 weeks. Mom was a black Lab who looked purebred, Dad??? There are 2 chocolate males, 2 black males, 1 black female and one darling female who looks exactly like a Lab, perfect short hair, perfect "Otter" tail, perfect Lab head, BUT she also has perfect German Shepherd markings.

Our 6 "drainage ditch puppies" will be ready for new homes on July 10th. They are all eating by themselves [like little pigs] having their first shots and being wormed. Both chocolates, 1 black female, and our adorable "perfect Lab girl" with the German Shepherd markings are reserved already. The 2 black males, are available. E-mail jackilab@comcast.net for more information.

ALL PUPPIES RESERVED! THANK YOU!   (7/6)

Here they are at 8 weeks old -- ready to go to HOME!!

Molly's Puppies update: December 1999

We got a letter from the adoptive family of two of the pups. Click here to see the letter.

This is Lucy with Ryan who thinks she is BEAUTIFUL!

Molly seems to be our good luck name. The Merced Shelter called us, they had picked up a starving, stray black female Lab who was so far gone they were going to euthanize her the next morning. Molly fooled them and had 8 little black Lab puppies during the night. The Shelter gave her all the good food she could eat. They even gave her a little 5 week old Lab mix puppy who had been dumped at the Shelter and she fed him too. Molly and her brood of 9 were picked up by a wonderful foster family and nursed back to health, wormed, given their shots and cared for for 8 long weeks. Molly and all her babies have each found loving homes, even the little Lab mix orphan.

Happy Endings

      22 Sep 1998
"CCLRR did it's first official rescue today. We got a call from a volunteer at the Sacramento County Animal Shelter, they had a nice black male and an older yellow female too. I scheduled today to go see & take pics for the web site. Last night I got a call from a woman with a blind sister who had lost her Lab. She asked if I had a quiet older Lab as a companion for her sister. Why yes, I said, as a matter of fact there is a really nice older yellow female with obedience training at the Sacramento Shelter. There was silence on the line, then...."What is her name"? Molly, I say brightly!. Dead silence again on the line, then a very deep breath, almost choking she tells me the following.
"A caregiver approved by her sister's social worker had presented totally bogus credentials to gain entrance to the homes of blind people. This person had stolen Molly thinking she could sell her for big bucks. When she found she couldn't, she dumped Molly as an "owner surrender" at the Sacramento Shelter. Since Molly is 8 years old she was scheduled to be put down. In fact when Deborah's social worker called the shelter, she was told yes we had a Molly, but she was put down on the 17th. One of the shelter officers stopped the kill order on her own and contacted the volunteer who called me -- none of us knowing the whole story. Anyway, I picked Molly up today and delivered her to Deborah.

Molly stood up in the back of my car as we turned down Deborah's street, and wagged her tail. I could barely get a lead on her before she jumped out of the car and dragged me to the door. Needless to say there were tears all around. I have called all the newspapers and TV stations & hope we get some publicity from this. The shelter needs it, we need it & just maybe someone who reads about Molly may go adopt a shelter dog. Yes I feel pretty darn good today -- wish they all ended like this."
